Gary formed his quartet ten years ago to develop his compositional skills. His compositions are in a contemporary vernacular but take on popular music song forms, big bands, modal and be-bop. The band have their own ‚contemporary straight ahead‘ sound rooted in the tradition but with each member’s own voice on their respective instrument combining to create a fresh but recognisable palate. As well as tunes by Willcox, the band also reinterpret works by some of the giants of modern jazz including Monk, Coltrane, Shorter and Bird.
